The key lies in 'designer', 'vintage', 'streetwear' and 'boho'-ey sites. These lack the traditional preppy/boring feel of middle-class teen clothing.

I experience the same thing as you. I love shopping at Plato's Closet! You should definately find one in your area; that's the best way to get unique but cool stuff. Also, local boutiques are a must. Also try TJ Maxx and Marshall's. Alot of my clothes are also from Old Navy. Really, the key is scoping out those high-fashion items at stores with cheap clothing. For accessories, try Claire's, Icing, Charlotte Russe, etc. For shoes, Payless, Old Navy, Plato's and Zappos.com.
Additionally, learn to sew. I do, and it pays off! I just transformed a $6 skirt from plato's into a cute, flouncy just-above-the-knee skirt. And I also turned a giant tank top into a boho-style summer dress.
Finally, be on the lookout for trends! Download the style.com app for your ipod Touch and get inspired by runway shows. Then, when shopping, pick up similar items and refuse to reach for those 'comfort clothes' that everyone else wears. =]What are cute clothing brands for teenagers that is not common?
go to boutiques near your area, or even thrift shops.
some of them have really nice stuff, and most people will not have the same things that you have if you buy stuff from boutiques, thrift shops or non-chain stores. and some websites for clothes are:
