How does the media affect teenagers sexuality and body image?

let me know if you know any decent sites to find information.

i'm also looking for previous research, theories and studies. How does the media affect teenagers sexuality and body image?
I think the media perpetuates the falsehood that ';everybody is doing it,'; when it comes to sex. It also promotes the Calista Flockhart body, rail thin with no curves.

Follow your own heart, not the examples you see in the media. How does the media affect teenagers sexuality and body image?
By stigmatizing the sex that teens have always been interested in (remember that a lot of humans married between 13 and 18 until just a couple centuries ago). Also, media feeds young people an idealized true love/love at first sight/happily ever after image wherein relationships that are meant to be should not take any work to be perpetually perfect. On the matter of body image, every culture has means of perpetuating an ideal of beauty with or without what we now call ';the media';. I think that mass communication may speed up the change and cause excess stress as conformists (and intentional non-conformists) try to keep up.
it creates a sence of perfection that people feel preasured to keep up with

as teenagers are vunrable and easily lead because the are just discovering who they are and they dont wana get it wrong because they feel the need 2 fit in. so they try to copie something whick has been prove 2 b populare.

  • Do you know of volunteer spots in Maine in the summer for teenagers?

My cousin lives in southern or central Maine and he lives in a small town (low population rate) but wants to do volunteer work. He is 15 years old. Many volunteer places have actually turned him down because he is a teenager with little experience (in building, buisness, etc.) and it's actually hard to find places. So thanks.Do you know of volunteer spots in Maine in the summer for teenagers?
try hooking up with a service organization (red cross, hospital, a non-profit) they need lots of help and they usually don't turn people away.

How to kick off games addiction and re-focus on study for teenagers who have spending years gaming?

Hook on internet games and unwilling to kick off. Peer influence is too great. Must on to be on par. How to turn back or to balance. My kid will not listen to me, as he has his own logic and do not bother much. How to kick off games addiction and re-focus on study for teenagers who have spending years gaming?
Perhaps you can relay to him what happened to me, a game addict: I now have Carpal Tunnel syndrome in both wrists and have to have an operation. I have gained a ton of weight which has made my sore joints hurt even more. Ask him if he doesn't get tired of the boring, repetitive nature of gaming (if you really analyze it). It really makes you stupid, you're not interested in anything else, not even your so-called friends. You must try and offer a better alternative to him. After a while nothing in real life seems as exciting as gaming. I don't quite know what else to say to you. It's a bit like being an alcoholic - you have to want to quit yourself. PS maybe he can just not get anymore pocket money until his grades improve (have the internet connection cut off) and then he won't be able to buy games. How to kick off games addiction and re-focus on study for teenagers who have spending years gaming?
Try to make him a schedule and get him to stick to it. Like say.. If you finish your homework by a certain time, you can play for a few hours or so. And don't forcefully try to stop him by taking away his console and making him study and such. That'll only make him rebel.
He's spent years on gaming? Just ban him from the computer. He'll get the picture when he's grounded and find something else to do.

Can someone give me some easy but good Mexican Food Recipes for teenagers to make?

Quesedillas - get tortillas, grated cheese, salsa, green onion.

Spread 1 tbsp salsa on tortilla.

Sprinkle on grated cheese and green onion.

Fold over and fry on a dry skillet until it is toasted and the cheese melts flipping once.

Eat with more salsa. Can someone give me some easy but good Mexican Food Recipes for teenagers to make?
    here is a good website

Choriso and scrambled eggs. Choriso is a mexican version of a sausage. It comes in plastic, you remove it and place it in a frying pan and soften it. You add as many eggs-beaten together-as needed for taste. Its quite spicy. You can add onion, green pepper, asst. cheeses, fried potatoes. Warm tortillas, add choriso mixture wrap up and eat. Great for on the go.
quesadillas. Just get a soft tortilla, put some cheese in it, put it on the stove until the cheese melts, and then eat.
I tortilla, one splat of refried beans, a slice of cheese presto.
easy.... taco bell, I recomend the crunch wrap with large coke.
    Tostadas definitely!

Buy the packaged ones at a Hispanic food store.

    Spread refried beans on them.

Fresh cheese crumbled on top of that. (Queso fresco)

    Add some shredded lettuce.

    Then some diced tomato.

    Avocado slices after the tomato.

    Top it of with salsa.

    Delicious

I like them vegetarian style but you can add shredded chicken breast between the cheese and the lettuce if you like.
    Easy Taco Salad

This is something teens will have no problem with.

    2 lbs Ground beef

    1 Head lettuce

    4-6 c. Shredded cheddar cheese

    4-6 c. Shredded mozz. cheese

    1 can Black olives

    Sour cream

    1 Tomato

    2 Pkgs taco seasoning

    1 bag Tortillia chips

    Chop Lettuce

    Dice Tomatoes

    Slice Olives

Brown ground Beef in pan, drain greese. Add seasoning packages (follow directions on pack for mixing)

Layer: Chips, Beef, Lettuce, Tomato, Olives, Cheese, on Plate.

Place in Microwave to melt cheese. Add sour cream and avocado if you like.

    Or,

    Nachos

    Tortilla chips - extra thick - 1 14-oz bag

    Refried beans - 2-3 cups

Cheddar Cheese - 1/2 lb, grated, about 3 cups

Pickled jalapeno peppers - 4 peppers, sliced

    Optional, but highly recommended

    Salsa

    Guacamole

    Sour cream

    Cilantro, chopped

Preheat the oven to 350掳F. Arrange a layer of tortilla chips along the bottom of a wide, shallow baking pan. It will make things easier if this baking pan also can be used as a serving pan, such as the ceramic platter shown in the photo above. The layer of tortilla chips can be a couple chips thick. Spread the refried beans over the chips (this is why you need extra thick chips, so they don't break when encountering the beans). Sprinkle the grated cheese over the top of chips and beans. Sprinkle slices of jalape帽o peppers over the cheese. Bake in oven for 10 minutes, or until cheese is melted. 5 minutes in a convection oven.

Serve with dollops of salsa, sour cream and guacamole, with chopped cilantro sprinkled on top.
Tostadas are easy and everyone can make their own. You can now buy flat corn tortillas in a box that just need to be heated in the oven for a couple of minutes. Then the kids can add, heated refried beans, shredded cheese, shredded lettuce, olive slices, diced tomatoes or anything else they can think of! These are always a quick dinner for us on a rushed evening.
burritos are always a winner with kids! I use different meats, but they like regular spiced ground beef. 1 pound beef, 1 pound bag of dried pintos cooked, 1 med onion diced, 1 pound cheese, 1-2 cups of cooked rice, chili or other spices, about 3 dozen flour tortillas. (if you want to save yourself from cooking the beans, look for the big bulk cans of pre-cooked pintos in the hispanic area of the store, or use 3 big cans of refried beans.)

Mash up the beans with some of the bean juice. Cook the meat with your favorite taco seasoning, add to the beans. shredd cheese into beans, add onion and rice. mix all this well, heat up flour tortillas and roll into burritos with both ends tucked. Cool the burritos the throw in freezer bags. Its cheaper than store bought, you know whats in them, and everyone loves them!

they take 1 1/2-2 minutes to thaw in the microwave

Sometimes I lay them in a casserole dish and pour enchilada sauce over, top with more cheese and heat in the oven-home made encheritos!

What are your views on teenagers viewing pornography?

Is it just a ';healthy, normal part of growing up'; that all teen boys do or does it give an unhealthy perception on sex and women that teen boys don't need placed in their head?

Thoughts? Would you accept your teen son (or even daughter) looking at pornography? What are your views on teenagers viewing pornography?
Porn sites are not allowed in my home

and if I find porn in my foster son's room I remove it and talk to him about it

I have not found any yet but he's only 14. I would not accept anyone in my house viewing porn unless they are over 18What are your views on teenagers viewing pornography?
I would accept limited viewing, like a playboy mag hidden somewhere or something.

I dont have a problem with porn, and view it myself. My problem is that most porn gives a very unreal perception of what sex is and how it happens in the real world. Its a fantasy, and I think its easy for someone with no real world experience to confuse that fantasy with reality.

On the other hand I know that teenagers have a sex drive and I fully promote masturbation as a healthy alternative to having sex. And I know teenagers are curious about things. So, maybe I would allow a mag or something, but I would NOT allow unlimited access to porn.
I'm sooooo with Midnight on this one, couldn't have expressed my views better. I understand that all boys/men look at porn, and am FINE with that. I would MUCH rather my son look at a magazine than crap on the internet, tho. Things were soooo innocent when Playboy was around. Now, there are so many deplorable images/things that it make me sick! I can only hope that my husband and I will instill the respect for women that we also hold.
When I was 17, I was testing the boundaries abit. At one point I told my mother I was going to move to Nevada and be a whore when I turned 18. The anticipation as I waited for her to blow up was almost too much. When she didn't even look up from her book to reply, ';Be sure to charge extra since you're naturally built.'; it kinda took the wind out of my sales.

Shortly there after, again looking to get a rise out of her, I asked to borrow the car so I could go buy a playgirl. She handed me the keys, and nonchalantly asked if she could borrow it after I was done. Haven't bought one since.

I swear, that woman knew how to take the ';fun'; out of most anything. Her lack of response really helped settle me.

When my son gets a little older, and I inevitably find that stack of Playboys under his bed, I'm not going to have a cow, I'll simply organize them by month and year, and stack them neatly on his nightstand for him.

I do, however, have a problem with internet porn. Most of it is just nasty, some downright disturbed, and some of it illegal. I don't want him using my computer, and my dsl to hunt for that crap, as I am liable for what he does.

Many years ago, my ex had a teenage son, aged 15, knew I still used the computer in his room, and yet still tried to lock me out of it. I became curious, and went digging, sure enough, in a file marked, ';Private Stuff'; (who did he think he was kidding?) I found a bunch of porn. His mom was very religious and I knew she'd have a cow if she found out about it. I didn't delete the files. I didn't have a cow. I did decide those girls looked a tad bit cold. So I took them into Photoshop and ';dressed'; them. Those that were beyond dressing, I turned in to abstract art. We never did find any porn on his computer again.
I think most teens look at porn more out of curiosity then for some sort of sexual pleasure, and that it's fine if it's just something that happens once and a while. I watched a short clip on PornTube once with friends because it was just so ridiculous it was comical; I mean the character's name was Lexxx Luther. It was more like the way you watch a really absurd video on YouTube just to laugh. It wasn't a thrill for us at all.

Sometimes it's not even a deliberate choice to see porn. I went to a site once for insults in foreign languages (as a joke) and was stunned to see graphic porn pop right up on the screen without any warning.

It's unhealthy if it's an obsessive habit. If the boy was watching porn on a daily or even weekly basis it would be detrimental.

Edit: Just wanted to add that I am 17, and have never known a single person my age who hasn't seen porn at some point. It's rather naive of any parent to think their kid hasn't seen at least a glimpse of it by the time they've finished high school. As far as I know, none of us sexual deviants or miscreants. Most are fully aware that it is fantasy, not reality, and could quite frankly care very little about it. It's not something to focus on or get riled up over so long as it's not a habit. If given the choice between watching porn or reading Jane Austen, I'd pick the book Pride %26amp; Prejudice, not a seedy porn with a title like Prick %26amp; Prejudice. Focus on the things you should get your kid to do - like reading - rather than on the things you want to forbid.
There are so many kinds of porn that I'd have to say being discriminatory about it would make me feel better as a parent and since we don't have it in the house (personal reasons not really moral ones), they won't see it here (unless my husband has a stash out in the garage). I will do my part to teach respect of women and that body types are varied and 34 24 36 or whatever it is may be attractive to some, it's not the only beautiful body type. I realize teens get horny and if that someone prevented them from reckless sex, then maybe that's a positive....
I was always curious as a teen, as were all my girlfriends. We tricked boys into dropping their pants, sneaked looks at our dads playboy collections, spied on older brother, stupid stuff like that. Silly and maybe innappropriate, but normal, healthy curiosity, that didn't scar any of us, or give us unrealistic expectations.

A lot of the porn teens are using now, is free, online, amateur stuff- couples that find it a turn on to post their bedroom exploits online. So not really unrealistic expectations. It's not the airbrushed, photoshopped, guy with a 10 inch penis, and perfect blonde with no waist and 34D's. It's normal couples, normal sex, and much more realistic.

Would I accept it? I don't know. I wouldn't be mad. We would talk about it. Come to a decision. I haven't been put in that situation yet, so I don't know what I would or wouldn't do!
I know I am in the minority here, but I feel it is bad for a person to view porn...whether it be a teen or an adult. I believe it skews any person's view of sex, even if they don't believe it to do so. And a teens mind is still forming...why throw porn into the mix when his/her hormones and emotions are already crazy.
Oh, yeah, sure, I'll even buy it for him.

Come off it, somethings you are not going to be able to stop completely (kids looking at nude mags or porn flics) but does anyone really want to condone such behavior? That's like saying, ';Well, my kid is gonna get drunk anyways, better he get drunk at home.'; Pfft, I don't think so.
seeing as I was forced to watch porn for the first time at 13, with my mom of all things, i would say i would kinda hope that people can wait until the kid is at least 16 or able to handle it.
It depends the age and how much. If it was like a magazine or like once a month they watched a soft core porn on the computer or something I wouldn't be too worried.

What is it that makes teenagers think they know everything?

I don't mean this as an offensive question, as I was a ';know it all'; teenager once too.

But why do they think they know everything? What is it that makes teenagers think they know everything?
Because we do know everything! lol. Just kidding.

We get more priveleges and responsibilities, and we try to think like the adult.

We don't look at our parents like we did when we were little, ya know, like they could just say, ';It's okay.'; and it's magically okay.

We don't wanna believe that our parents went through the same situation so we don't think they understand what we're feeling when we're so upset and all they say is, ';It'll be fine.'; or ';You need to let it go.'; because it just seems easy for them to say when they're not the one experiencing the problem.

That's about the best answer I can give you. What is it that makes teenagers think they know everything?
It's a defense mechanism, what could be called the

security blanket of perceived invincibility, in a sense

it's a tragic irony, when your young you don't know

what it's like to be old, and no i don't mean 19 going

on 21, i mean 21, one day and then you look in the

mirror some day, and you don't even recognize that

person, and you gasp as you ask yourself, WTF?

    where the hell did i go? . . .

And yet you get old and you know exactly what it felt

like to be young, even though your not young anymore . . .

When we're young we don't look at old people as much

as we looked through them, as though there invisible . . .

Young people are enchanted by the though of possessing

wisdom, yet totally repulsed, when they realize what

comes along with the territory, there in a constant state

of denial, through no fault of there own, for if they could

actually see them selves old, and i don't mean you were 19,

now your 21, definitely not an age qualification, i mean getting

up one morning and seeing your self at lets say, 55 or even 65

or even 70, forget it, you'd never make to 22, let alone make to

old age, due to the self inflicted cuts and lacerations, from beating the

hell out of your mirror, while seriously contemplating, suicide . . .
I don't know. I was there too though. I think that they think that their lives are so much different than that of their parents when they were teens, when in actuality they weren't. The only difference now is the technology kids have access to today.

I don't know. Teens will be teens. They just haven't experienced real life and responsibility yet.
well.. because im a teeneger ...i know the exact reason...although its hard to explain....

we think that once we go through something that we know everything about it...but the truth is ..we have only been through a small portion....so when older ppl try to tell us that we are wrong we just think ';no your wrong...ive been through it...i know all about it...'; but once we realize that we were wrong then we just learn from our mistakes....

this answer may be a tad bit confusing....but its the only way i could think to put it
They are still trying to find themselves and develop a sort of identity for themselves. It's scary growing up into a whole new world and way of life so in defense they assume they know everything so that nothing can sneak up on them and throw them off.
Because they're arrogant annoying little cusses and their parents didn't smack them around enough when they were children.
Because their parents let them think that way.

How dangerous is it for teenagers to be soldering everyday with 62/36/2 solder for an hour a day?

62/36/2 = 62% Tin, 36% Lead, and 2% Silver. I'm mostly curious as this is what my school's Electronics class makes us use. Thanks in Advance. How dangerous is it for teenagers to be soldering everyday with 62/36/2 solder for an hour a day?
Generally if you have good ventilation and have been trained not to put your face right over the plume, it will not be significantly more dangerous than other exposure that you have on a daily basis. Keep in mind that all chemicals are poison, it is just a matter of the dose that it takes to affect you.

However, if you feeling the effects of exposure or you think the ventilation is poor, it's probably worth further investigation. I doubt you have the ability to measure the concentration in milligrams per cubic meter, but you may be able to estimate it. In the text below they mention that you can smell it at about 0.07mg /m^3.

OSHA standards exist that limit the amount of exposure people should have if they are doing this for 8 hours a day for years at a time. You are probably being exposed for 6 months or a year and for 1 hour or less, so the effects to you are likely minimal.

Here is what OSHA says about it:

ROSIN CORE SOLDER PYROLYSIS PRODUCTS, AS FORMALDEHYDE CAS: None; Chemical Formula: None H.S. No. 1350

OSHA previously had no limit for rosin core solder pyrolysis products. Based on the ACGIH TLV, the Agency proposed an 8-hour TWA of 0.1 mg/m(3) for these compounds, measured as formaldehyde. OSHA has determined that a TWA limit of 0.1 mg/m(3) is necessary to prevent workers from experiencing severe irritant reactions, and the Agency is including this limit in its final rule. This limit applies to the thermal decomposition products of gum rosin soldering flux (3 to 6 percent rosin and 30 to 70 percent tin-lead solder)(Lozano and Melvin, unpublished data, as cited in ACGIH 1986/Ex. 1-3, p. 514).

A two-week exposure of guinea pigs and rats to these products at average concentrations of 0.96 mg/m(3) caused reduction in rate of weight gain in male guinea pigs, abnormal liver-to-body-weight ratios in guinea pigs of both sexes, and abnormal heart-to-body-weight ratios in male rats (Industrial Bio-test Lab, Inc., as cited in ACGIH 1986/Ex. 1-3, p. 514). Lungs of the animals exposed in this same study were hyperemic.

In humans, slight bronchial irritation has been reported at 1 mg/m(3) (Industrial Bio-test Laboratories, Inc. 1967, as cited in ACGIH 1986, p. 514). Several workers who were chronically exposed to levels as high as 0.15 mg/m(3) had to be removed from exposure because of intractable upper respiratory tract irritation; when concentrations were kept below 0.1 mg/m(3), such irritation was not reported (Christy 1965, as cited in ACGIH 1986/Ex. 1-3, p. 514). In a study designed to quantify dose-response levels for irritation in human volunteers, subjects were exposed for 15 minutes to these products at aldehyde concentrations (measured as formaldehyde, which is the best indirect measure of rosin pyrolysis products) of 0.04 to 0.2 mg/m(3) (U.S. Public Health Service 1965, as cited in ACGIH 1986/Ex. 1-3, p. 514). Subjects detected the odor at 0.07 mg/m 3, and 80 percent of subjects reported moderate to severe irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat at concentrations of 0.12 mg/m(3) or above. At levels below 0.05 mg/m(3), fewer than 10 percent of subjects experienced irritation. Mucous membrane irritation occurred in 30 percent of subjects exposed at 0.07 mg/m(3) (U.S. Public Health Service 1965, as cited in ACGIH 1986/Ex. 1-3, p. 514).

NIOSH (Ex. 8-47, Table N6B; Tr. p. 3-97 to 3-98) did not concur with OSHA's selection of a TWA limit of 0.1 mg/m(3) and recommended a ceiling limit of 0.1 ppm for a 15-minute period. In addition, NIOSH (the only commenter to the rulemaking record) considers these thermal decomposition products to be likely candidates for a separate 6(b) rulemaking.

OSHA is establishing an 8-hour TWA limit of 0.1 mg/m(3), measured as formaldehyde, for rosin core solder pyrolysis products. OSHA concludes that this limit will protect employees from the significant risk of respiratory tract irritation, which is a material impairment of health, that exists at levels above the new PEL.How dangerous is it for teenagers to be soldering everyday with 62/36/2 solder for an hour a day?
The risk from lead or other heavy metals is mainly to do with vapours, dust and other ways of getting it into the system. If it were boiling lead there would be cause for concern. If you chew on the lead solder and swallow it there may be some risk, but mostly it passes through. The fumes (from the resin flux) may be of some risk to asthmatics or others with sensitivities or allergies. That is why it is general practice to use fume extraction or filtration. I doubt there is any cause for concern. It seems reasonable to wash your hands before eating (or smoking) after using solder, or any other activity. Alcohol, cigarettes and cars are far more hazardous.

The European Union is moving away from Lead/Tin solders by regulation, to reduce the heavy metals in land fills basically, which eventually leaches into water supplies.
It seems a strange sort of school electronics class where you are actually soldering for an hour every day. Haven't they heard of breadboards, or circuit analysis software using computers?

Whatever, if you use a bit of common sense (don't directly breathe in the fumes, don't pick up your soldering iron by the hot end) you are probably more likely to get killed in a road accident while travelling to and from school than damaged by your electronics class.
The only danger is that the students may want to become engineers.

How do I keep my teenagers off my computer?

    I have it password protect,

    I have Vista

They have gotten around the password somehow even though I have changed it.

They get in an reactivate the Guest account , which I have turned off numerous times.

HOW DO I STOP them from using my computer when I am at work? How do I keep my teenagers off my computer?
If you have a router at home (Linksys, Netgear, etc) most of them allow you to restrict access times. So you can easily limit the computer to only have internet access during the evening or weekends or whenever you choose. Be sure to change the default password on the router.

That should baffle them for a while. How do I keep my teenagers off my computer?
    remove the guest account

    rename the administrators account

    use vista

    use parental controls within vista

    set allowable loggin in times
Purchase a laptop and take it with you.
ok mate this will keep them out no problems lol but if you forget it you will stay out as well lol, ok when windows starts up click to go into the bios i hope you know what this is, ok now click password and choose whatever you want make sure you remember this password, then when you exit turn the pc on now you will have a screen asking for the password now get one of your kids to type it in, make sure they don't know it, ok now when you type it wrong three times it will just beep untill you restart and type it properly, ok now to get rid of these passwords most of the time you have to pull out the bios battery, ok for umm those logon accounts with vista and xp all you do is log on to safe mode and give your self full control it is that easy and simple we did it at school all the time cos my mates always forget there passwords so hope this helps bud.
    buy them their own?

use a secure password, and make sure no key loggers are installed.

buy a key-lock case so that it can only be powered up when the computer is unlocked with the key.
Learn a thing or two about computers, and maybe you can stop them, see we teenagers arent as stupid as youd think
    http://www.toplang.com/desktoplock.htm
I don't think that your children using your computer should be your first worry. It seems as though they aren't listening to your rules. Talk to them about guidelines. Tell them, if they aren't happy with the situation, they should work on getting their own computer.
Take the power cord with you :) Or monitor cable, whole keyboard, mouse, modem, modem power cord etc be creative

Or setup a BIOS password when the computer is booting up, but if they are geeks they can open up the PC and by pass it by removing the battery or other ways too. There are also backdoor passwords too so it's not the best solution but it could work. They can simply google ';bypass boot password' and have a solution in minutes.

general guide on how to set one:

    http://www.lockdown.co.uk/?pg=biospsw%26amp;s=鈥?/a>

I do agree with Elizabeth but I was a male teenager with the internet too once and it seems kids today will stop at nothing to get their fix of pron and or myspace.

If they are true geeks, they can bypass Windows and surf the net with a Linux live CD - pop in the disk, reboot, and it loads linux in RAM surf the net, check email, myspace, etc., take out the cd is there was never any trace of linux. But a BIOS password would prevent this.

What are common drugs that teenagers use in schools, and how easy is it for one to purchase?

Why are drugs so popular in schools and made easily available to teenagers to purchase in schools, what are the most commonly used drugs? what are the most common prescription drugs? what are affects of the prescription drugs, what are know child birth defects? kids that are most likley to become addicted? What are common drugs that teenagers use in schools, and how easy is it for one to purchase?
High school kids tend to dig...

    weed: needs no explanation.

Hydrocodone: synthetic codeine-like opiate, most common brand name is vicodin.

Amphetamine and other stimulants: Adderall is probably the most awesome, i'm basically addicted to the stuff, Ritalin and Concerta have the same active ingredient, and they're pretty good, especially with adderall. also i'm pretty sure they are not physically addictive. vyvance is another amphetamine, which is usually less awesome than adderall, but still pretty nice. I Personally love this **** because they make me think so clearly and quickly, it's like my mind is on overdrive. plus you can be entertained by ANYTHING.

Alprazolam/ Xanax: the holy grail of Anti-anxiety depressants. Make you relaxed, not give a **** about anything, and cause legendary memory lapses.

kids also tend to dig oxycodone, valium, morphine sulfate, and DXM.What are common drugs that teenagers use in schools, and how easy is it for one to purchase?
Drugs are popular because they take away reality or make pain go away. Teenagers usually want that.

It's easily available because people outside of schools know how much money kids have, and they exploit it.

The most commonly used drugs at my school is pot.

The most common prescription drug is a valium-type thing, I think.

For the rest, look up specifc drugs online for the affects.

Kids most likely to become addicted is EVERYONE, because it has the same addictive qualities for everyone. However, the kids most likely to get INVOLVED in drugs is rich kids, because they have the most money.
The most common drugs used in schools is Marijunna or commonly known as Weed.It is as easy as 1 2 3 to get in these schools. It isnt all that addicting but if you use it continuly for a few months then yeah you will be addicited. If you use it for years and years then your kids will born crying for a blunt not milk.

Vikiden is the most commonly perscription drug that is abused by teenagers. It is HIGHLY ADDICTING and you WILL end up in rehab for only using it a few times for at least a year.

    Hope this helps
Drugs are popular amongst teens because most of the time, our lives suck, and we need some outlet. At my school I know guys who seel weed, heroin, cocaine, salvia, meth, and more. It really is a service. You got the problems, they have the solution. Most teens use drugs like Vicodin, Ibufrofen, and more. Because most of it is there house. Weed is the most popular, and I smoke it when I am in the mood.

why do you ask? what are you? A Narc?
most used in a high school is Marijuana or weed. the second would be crack, cocaine, in a sniffed or smoked form. third would be acid. fourth would be steroids.

it is so easy to get any type of drug. I can go up to 10 people and ask for weed and 4 of them will have it or know were to get it.

there are 1800 kids in my school so that is pretty bad.

1gram of weed = $10 is the average price of weed.
at my school obviously it's weed. and then there's pills like vicodin, oxycontin. also you can get shrooms pretty easy. acid, is kinda common if you know the right people. cocaine is not as common but its still there at school. some meth. and to all you people that say weed is addictive. i smoke weed nearly every day for three years and have had to stop for a couple months at a time for drug tests and didn't have any problem at all. so i know its not addictive.
The most common used drug is heroin. Its for sale at your local walmart. 16.99.

How is summer good for teenagers socially?

If someone tried to take your summer, how would you say it affected you socially? How is summer good for teenagers socially?
Over the summer you have more time to grow as a person outside of school. How is summer good for teenagers socially?
you get to have the time to know people better out side of school, a chance to get close and know when their act is real or not. to know who is really there for you or who is faking
It lets them go to camps and stuff where they get to meet people who have more in common with them than those at school do.

What is there to do on family vacation in Dallas with teenagers?

We are planning a mini vacation the end of July to Dallas. I know about Six Flags and Hurricane Harbor in Arlington. Does anyone recommend Hurricane Harbor or is it a waste of time and money? What other places are fun for teenagers in or around Dallas? My son is 14, and three daughters ages 13 12 and 11. Any ideas are welcome. Thank you. What is there to do on family vacation in Dallas with teenagers?
Six Flags is much better than Hurricane Harbor.

Since you are already there in Arlington, go see the Texas Rangers! Their ballpark is near by Six Flags.

There is also a restaurant off of I-35 near downtown called Medieval Times. It is a restaurant where you can eat and watch a Medieval-like show. What is there to do on family vacation in Dallas with teenagers?
Well, you mentioned Six Flags. Kids always love that! It has many rides and Hurricane Harbor (I have not been, but heard) Is an awesome, very large, water park. I'm not sure about the money, but I know it sounds fun!

Have fun in Dallas, hope you and your kids enjoy it! =D
Hawiian Falls is a fun waterpark, or Sclitterbhan Waterpark. Hurricane Harbor is awesome!
Hurricane Harbor is boring to me.

    I hate it.

I love six flags way better.

Plus, six flags have just built some new rides.

What is the best /cheapest way to purchase insurance for a teenagers?

Do I insure the vehicle in my name only and not list my 17 year old as the primary driver? Will this affect his future insurance prices? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. What is the best /cheapest way to purchase insurance for a teenagers?
In car insurance, the word ';teenager'; and ';cheap'; are impossible. The best thing to do is get your teenager a car that is paid for and insure it liability only. That way the premium will be at least half what it would be on a vehicle with comp and coll insurance. The biggest mistake most parents make is they allow their 16 yr old to get a brand new car not knowing beforehand how much the insurance will be until after they already bought it! GET QUOTES FIRST! If they are good students most companies offer a good student discount. Also some companies IE Farmers offer an additional discount if the teenager watches a driving safety video and answers some questions. Teach your new driver how to be responsible and in a few years the rate will be less due to experience. What is the best /cheapest way to purchase insurance for a teenagers?
Add him to your policy as an additional driver. If he is the primary driver, he should be listed as such.
';Teenager'; and ';cheap insurance'; do not mix.

Teach your son/daughter to be a good driver, pay attention, reduce distractions (no cell phones and no texting while driving). etc. He/she will develop a good driving record and that will help.

    Good Luck
Call 1.800.esurance , they have a youthful driver discount every six months until the age of 25 for young drivers.

What is it like being the parent of a lot of teenagers?

At the moment I have 6 year old twin girls, a 4 year old son and a 2 month old baby. I am also planning to get pregnant with my last baby in the next year if possible.

I just realised that in 11 years time I will have two 17 year olds, a 15 year old, an 11 year old and a 9 or 10 year old. AHHH

Is it difficult? What is it like being the parent of a lot of teenagers?
Its like nailing jello to a tree (and makes about as much sense.)

It is like going through the 'terrible twos' again-- they smell, they are moody, whiney, loud, illogical, full of tantrums, except now you can't pick them up and put them in time out because they are BIGGER than you!

Enjoy them while they are small....What is it like being the parent of a lot of teenagers?
~laughing, giggling, snorting, laughing some more~

Yes it is difficult, but if you teach your children boundaries now it will be easier later.

Also while in 11 years time you will have several teens and pre teens, about 3 years later the oldest three will be in college. Which means not in your home. ~laughs again~ But it also means they will come home for vacations and holidays and will probably help a bit with the younger ones.

(sorry about all the laughter I just couldn't help myself. I hear that laughter is infectious, I hope it made you smile.)
YIKES!! Scary maybe?? You made me think!! And Im truly scared LOL

I dont know... I have teenage nieces and nephews which are pretty good but being their parent oh God no!

I cannot even imagine what it'll be like for me!! ARGHHHHHHHH
yes it is for my bro and my sis
I would say its a hard! Because before there able to drive, you'll be driving everywhere!!!
yea but you will get threw it.

What would you consider to be the best school district for teenagers in the San Diego area?

I am planning to relocate to the San Diego area this year and want to purchase a home in good area with good to outstanding schools for my children who will be entering the 9th drade this year. Any feedback would be much appreciated. What would you consider to be the best school district for teenagers in the San Diego area?
Poway has the best school district in the whole county. We lived there for 5 years and my daughter graduated from Poway High. What would you consider to be the best school district for teenagers in the San Diego area?
If you can afford the area, La Jolla High is an excellent public school. It's also close to Bishop's and La Jolla Country Day, which are good private schools. Really, though, I think the public schools in San Diego are fine; they face similiar challenges to public schools across the country and have a good track record.
    the ones without guns
Scripps Ranch Highschool is a respectable blue-ribbon school, I attended there myself. Spacious campus, it looks alot like a university, and a very friendly atmosphere, you pick up friends almost instanstly. The neighborhood is quiet and peaceful.
you can try north san diego... south isnt the best... la jolla or encinitas or around there.. those are good areas
all the school districts in san diego are very diaspointing

please consider private schools or home school

this is the best options for kids if you dont want them to get into drugs, gangs, early sex, or shot at either

    thanks

i went to a private school
i would do home school it is a beter option
I highly recommend the San Dieguito School District. And Torrey Pines High School is a very highly rated school.

    Check this link:http: www.sduhsd.k12.ca.us/html/sarcTP.html

    Good Luck!
i would home school the kids it is better

going to school were teenagers make threats and causes the school to be lock down like what happend today

you kids would be safer at home then going to a public school

Hi there. I think that a good theme for your weekend retreat would be Morality and Respect because those are two of the biggest issues that I've seen in schools lately.

  • What is the best skin care product on the market for teenagers?

ok so i live in england and do not have terrible skin, although it could be improved. i need something affordable that still works. any ideas? What is the best skin care product on the market for teenagers?
As I found in my research that result of any skin care product depends on the skin quality and texture. Natural home made beauty care products always best for skin care also the chances of side effect is very rare. But the product you purchase from the market, may be not made for your skin quality and it could create some problem on your skin.

So I suggest don't purchase any product without knowing well about that or without prescription of a doctor. What is the best skin care product on the market for teenagers?
That's an impossible question because everybody's skin is different.

I suggest you need something fairly simple and light. Don't spend a fortune. Cleanse thoroughly but gently, use a light toner after cleansing, apply a light day cream. Drink plenty of water %26amp; eat healthily.

Have a look at the web site below - you'll find lots of products reduced. try something like Simple or Anne French. It is not necessary to use a complete range from one manufacturer.

I guess you posted this question twice.

Like I said before, the Texas Rangers stadium is near Six Flags. There is Medieval Times, the restaurant in downtown Dallas....There are several malls like Galleria, Vista Ridge, Valley View, Grapevine Mills...The Dallas arboretum (botanical garden) is real nice. What is there to do on family vacation in Dallas with teenagers?
    Eat at the Blue Goose.

Go to Northpark (Mall) They have every store.
Definitely see the Dallas World Aquarium! It is a blast.

Fort Worth is fun too, Its just a train ride away from Dallas. The stock yards are fun to visit there. Also the Botanical Gardens, the Zoo and The Japanese Water Gardens are better in Ft. Worth. Have Fun!
oh yeah six flags would be a blast!,but i dont think hurricane harbor is theres the ft.worth zoo went there last week it was fun!then theres alot of malls in the ftw.dallas area and the have the rangers and they have sandy lake its really small tho so idk good luck!and have fun=]
Hurricain Harbor is okay. I think it's a little overpriced though. Check out BurgersLake in Fort Worth or NRH2O in N. Richland Hills both are less expensive and less crowded. The Rangers have a basball museum in Arlington. The Science Museum in Fort Worth is cool. Theres an Omni (imax) there and a platarium too. The Dallas Aquarium is great. For shopping I would suggest Grapevine Mills mall in Grapevine. Its not overpriced like some of the Dallas Malls. The Botanic and Japanesse gardens are sooooo pretty in FtWorth. There are winerys in Grapevine. McKinney Street trolley has a great tour around town with a bunch of stores and restaurants. Also, there's a train called Trantulla. It's an old steam engine and it takes you from downtown Grapevine (theres antique stores, shops, food, ect.) to the Stockyards in Ft, Worth. The Stockyards have all kinds of western themed shops, and restaurants. If you get down there, there's a cattle drive every morning at 11am through the streets. Theres also Billy Bob's over Texas. It's got a game room and dance floor, indoor rodeo, theres live music on the weekends by National Country Artist. The kids can go in as long as they are with you. The Westend in Dallas has shopping and food and usually theres live music on the street. Sundance Square is one of my favorite places. Its in downtown Ft Worth and theres always street artist and musicians out, theres art galleries, food, shopping, theater, so much to do down there and so pretty at night. If you like theater there are alot of choice in DFW. Bass Hall in Ft. Worth is beautiful. Dallas Summer Musicals are going on now. They also have Shakesphere in the park in Dallas. www.guidelive.com has a list of local events. The Palace of Wax and Ripleys Believe it or Not in Grand Prairie is pretty cool. Grand Prairie also has Loan Star Park with live horse racing. Theres this place in Euless called Americas Incredible Pizza. It is so much fun! It's like Chuck-e-cheese for older kids. It's got a buffet, 5 themed dining rooms, everthings indoor: go karts, neon putt putt, bumpercars, bowling and tons of games. We love it there. Don't forget to have some texas BBQ and some great mexican food. Ask locals where to eat. Whatever you do, Have fun.
Hurricane harbor is nice. check out guidelive.com for events when you will be here. The Ft Worth Zoo is cool. The West end has the 6th Floor Museum where Kennedy was killed.

What are some new popular slow songs to dance to for teenagers?

I'm going to be a DJ at a school dance and the students have requested more slow songs. Any ideas on which would be the best to play? What are some new popular slow songs to dance to for teenagers?
i would say dont play say goodbye by chris brown 4 the last song cause if u look at the lyrics....it isnt rele the best.....some older songs are ok..just not too many...play like 1 older 1 that every1 still loves and hasnt been overplayed on the radio....

What do you think are the most common reasons of why teenagers are running away from home?

Well, just like the question says. More teens are now running away from their household because of numerous reasons. What do you guys think are the most common reasons why they're running away? What do you think are the most common reasons of why teenagers are running away from home?
Probably Depression, Bullying, or Family Issues. If teens dont get along with their families, thats a huge influence. You often hear of teens with older boy/girl friends that run away to be with them when their parents disapprove. Or if they are being bullied in school or home. Bullying can drive some kids to suicide and most likely running away as well. Depression might also cause kids to run away. Feeling like they have nobody left in the world...yeah that'll do it. My advice- dont run away. It would be expensive and painfulWhat do you think are the most common reasons of why teenagers are running away from home?
Family life is breaking down. Parents want to/have to work all the time, yet they still want to have that picture-perfect ';family.'; Unfortunately, many don't want to make any sacrifices.

Kids are feeling increasingly angry and neglected -- like they are the fifth wheel. They are being abused and molested behind closed doors. Instead of children being made to feel loved, wanted and special, many parents treat their kids like they are a nuisance.

When the kids get a little bit older, the parents are just reaping what they've sown. Then comes the rebellion, drugs, sex, running away and all the things that make parents feel guilty and cry.
';THE TEENAGE YEARS'; are very tough because because you're at an age where you feel like you must impress people to be cool or that you must have those expensive shoes to fit in and in the end it ain't worth it. Teenagers feel like no one understands them and that Life is cruel no matter what. Of course there are those who run away because their parents treat them bad or because they are pregnant or even just for fun.
I think parents aren't parenting properly.. Young kids having kids.. They aren't great parents.. (I'm not saying ALL young parents so relax) I just think people are very lax when it comes to discipline now a days and no one follows though and then all of a sudden, those kids are teenagers and are now getting into things potentially harmful.. (experimenting with drugs, sex, etc..)

Now mom and/or dad steps up to parent but it's too late and the teen rebels and runs away..

Because life is a f***in' joke!!

    Edit:

I just want to say in response to some of the answers below me, saying that it's because of ';abuse,'; pregnancy,'; etc. ...

That's BULL. For some teens, that may be true, but seriously ..

We run away because this world is f***ed up. You live, and then you die. Tomorrow isn't promised, so we want to live everyday as if it's our last. We don't want to spend our entire lives searching for things we may never live to find. Again, tomorrow isn't promised. If I want to do something, I'm going to do it now; there may not be a later. Yeah, I could go to school everyday and bust my *** to get a 4.0 and all of this other sh**, but what would it all be for if I got into a car crash and died before I even graduated? It would just be a good life WASTED on bullsh**.

For example, I want to live in NYC someday, and I'm 16. Why the hell can't I go now?! There may not be a someday for me. As far as I'm concerned, today is the only day ..So I'm gonna live it up. I'll say it again: Life is a f***in; joke!!

That's why we run away. Not because we DON'T care, but because we DO.
I'm planning to run away from my house,

    i just can't take it,

    I feel like i'm a failure, a loser.

    I've done alot of ****,

    i've made my mother cry.

    i'm skipping school alot,

    i can't keep this up.

    i'm comtenplating suicide.

    i want to run away.

Conflicted emotional state, no one to talk to, growing pains, yearning for attention out of selfishness, spoiled brat-itis, etc.
Their brains haven't developed enough to realize the consequences of their actions after they run away. as for reasons, hmm, family trouble, or pregnancy.
Hard life at home they don't wanna put up with? Feeling neglected and unloved by their guardians. The reasons are numerous.
they don't like rules. they want to govern themselves and don't want to answer to anyone.
they hate the way their parents treat them or their parents are not letting them do what they wanna do!!! because of all the stupid stuff on the tv parents are freaking out lol! and holding back their kids...idk
Simple, most of them don't understand that their parents are really trying to help them.
Some run away because their parents don't approve of them being with a guy they like. It's a very stupid concept really...
    1) abuse

    2) to be with someone they were banned from seing
They wanna do what ever the heck they want.

What kind of guest speakers would be good to have for teenagers?

I think the ';every 15 minutes'; video or speaker about alcohol would be a great idea. What else do you think? What kind of guest speakers would be good to have for teenagers?
At all school we have alot of guest speakers. There were dancers that had been broke and then made a name for themselves but the one I remember clearly was a guy who came and talked about disabilities. And how they can be caused from alcohol abuse and drugs. He was inspirational (In my opinion) and there were a few others such as discrimination talks (Race, sexual orientation), peer pressure etc. Mainly just things that teens can relate to..I think Peer pressure is a good one. What kind of guest speakers would be good to have for teenagers?
I think anything to do with drinking and drugs is a great option.

What are good things to find in scavenger hunts for older teenagers?

I'm planning a party for a good friend...they're getting older, but we still love to do all the little kid stuff like capture the flag, ultimate frisbee, kickball, etc. For their birthday I want to do a scavenger hunt of sorts, but I want it to be more grown up, yet NOT dirty. Any suggestions? thanks! What are good things to find in scavenger hunts for older teenagers?
Check out http://www.mastersofthehunt.com/buy-a-sc鈥?/a> for hunts that are professionally designed with cool graphics. They can all be customized for your location, time frame, etc. Many to choose from for different age groups. What are good things to find in scavenger hunts for older teenagers?
If they can all drive, do a scavenger hunt around the town or county. Things like what street is the wonder bread sign on? Or what is the oldest tombstone in a certain cemetery. things like that. If not old enough to drive do if for around the neighbor hood or if small enough town the whole town.

Let your imagination go wild, just make sure the things you have them look for are things that will be there the day of the hunt.

haha Well I don't really know what any of that means but I think it would vary from person to person. No one reponds the same to the same things.

Still, when you give me your answer I'd prefer to know what website you got it from if you got it from a website at all. What are the two most commonly abused psychoactive drugs among teenagers?
    One hundred percent sure.

    Alcohol and Marijuana.

A psychoactive is defined as a chemical substance that exerts psychological effects including changes in mood, cognition, and behavior.

Alcohol and Marijuana are the cheapest and easiest to find, therefor the most abused.

What are 10 things teenagers should know how to do before leaving for college?

My daughter is a freshman in high school and we are trying to prepare her for college in a few years.

I would like to know what the Yahoo! Answers community believes are the top 10 things that teens should know how to do prior to leaving for college.

BTW, she knows how to cook basic meals, do her laundry, balance a checkbook and live within a budget. But I am looking for more! Especially from college students who wish their parents would have taught them more before they left. :)What are 10 things teenagers should know how to do before leaving for college?
my daughter just left for her first year of college and it's prioritizing and discipline, she isn't going to have you there to push her to prioritize things and push her to study and make the right decisions. Talk to her, let her know she can't trust everybody, it's not only the common sense things she needs to know, it's what to do when she's homesick and how to take care of herself and handle her money.

Good luck when she does go off, it's not easy cutting the cord....What are 10 things teenagers should know how to do before leaving for college?
Ooo I've just started college now hopeuflly i can help!

To be honest she seems to have the most important things down. As for balancing her money i would suggest budgeting it per week and whatever she has left at the end, to save it somewhere so in a few months she will have surprisingly a lot of money.

    - see if she has all the equipment she needs to organise her studies - folders, boxes etc

    - make sure she has a cab number saved so she can always get home safe (oh yeah always leave spare money for a cab)

    - how to economise on meals - we've been in a house for a month and as most of us go home at the weekend whoever has to stay in the house has very little choice of food. cheese on toast with baked beans always seems to be good.

    1. Self Defense

    2. Nutrition

    3. Budget

    4. Sustaining good relationships
Get herself up in the morning and off to school without parental nagging.

    time management.

mending clothes - small tears, buttons, etc.
oh... i thought you were talking about ten crazy things she should do before college but mommies and daddies probably don;t want that advice well um hmm i mean i would hope she could do her own laundry but as a freshman she can't have that much experience with money so keep up with that when she gets a job, and get her to save for a car WAAAAY to many kids have mommies and daddies buying them for the kid... they need to learn how to do something like that for themselves and they will be proud of themselves for earning the money themselves. or if she saves up idk lets say $900 then say whatever she saves you and daddy will match her dollar for dollar that way she'll have a car that runs lol um i guess make sure she can write an essay if english iv AP is available in her school make sure she takes it it is very helpful especially if you had my teacher mrs roy whew tough but good... um hmm make sure she takes a math all four years of high school unless she's going technical path. i don't think there is much else... except come sophmore and junior year start deciding on what college!!!!!! get started early! hope this helped you

  • What are some ways one could solve a child or teenagers bullying problems?

I do, mean solve the victims problems, not so much the kid who does the bullying.

I think, these children should be put into martial arts classes, and learn how to defend themselves with their fist.

I have this mentality, because it's becoming too common in our society where a long time bully victim will lash out in anger and, revenge by bringing a gun to school, and shooting innocent people. What are some ways one could solve a child or teenagers bullying problems?
Yes as someone who was bullied throughout school i would agree with you, Children and teenagers that are bullied should be encouraged to learn a form of unarmed combat not to mention that they will gain confidence and make new Friends through it, unfortunately i never learnt martial arts myself, but on the other hand when i finished school i eventually learned how to stand up for myself.

I know a lot of people will not agree but i think a good wallop in the face is the only thing that will teach some bullies, because i know that teachers will rarely do anything, my mother used to be spitting fire over the matter. What are some ways one could solve a child or teenagers bullying problems?
Put them in martial arts or get them into bodybuilding. The only way the bullying will stop is when the bully realizes that they can't get away with it. If adults intervene, it just proves to the bully that his victim is too weak to handle their own problems, and it most likely will not stop the harassment.

Bullies enjoy the feeling of power, the idea that they can make someone weaker do something they don't want to do or humiliate them without fear of being hurt or insulted back.

Sam is wrong to say bullies are ';cowards';..that's just a myth people use to make themselves feel better about being bullied, same as when Bush called the 9/11 terrorists ';cowards';. If bullies were so scared, they wouldn't pick on others.
In most martial arts classes, they wont allow you to use the acts taught in class outside of the classroom (for safety reasons for the other kids cause most of the time, the ones that bully, dont really know how to fight). If a kid that got bullied learned all these tricks on how to defend themselves, it may not stop at that. They may enjoy kicking the guy that bullied them's butt so much that they could seriously hurt them. I dont think that teaching violence in order to stop violence is the proper way to do things.

I think that we should go after the source (which is the one that bullies), and try to fix their problem instead. Therapy, phychiatrist, maybe scare them with the law a bit.

    We shouldnt create more violence.

edit: the person being bullied most of the time wont go cry to adults. Adults should be smart enough to see whats going on.
Well, my father was a Marine drill Sargent, so I was raised ';old school';. I was told to never start a fight, try to negotiate, but never run. I was told to crack a bully in the head with anything I could get my hands on. You see, most bullies really cant fight. They are bigger then other kids, so that intimidates the smaller kids. Most bullies will back down when they are confronted, and the ones who don't back down when confronted, will run and cry when they see their own blood.
Most bullies are cowards who use intimidation to frighten their victims simply because they get away with it. If someone stood up to them or beat the crap out of them, then they'd rethink their strategy.
they should know how to defend their selves because if not bullies will tease them or make them slaves in their school.actually I experience that.it's pretty hard i know, because bullies are usually big.children should attend martial arts classes every Saturday.

What pain medications are teenagers given after a circumcision?

No comments on ethics or doctor's not telling me the whole truth. Just what medsWhat pain medications are teenagers given after a circumcision?
panadol maybeWhat pain medications are teenagers given after a circumcision?
More than likely you will not have any pain and if you do it will not be so intolerable that you will need a strong pain killer. Usually tylenol or ibuprofen will take care of it. This whole idea of pain after a circumcision is another one of the myths that seems to get blown out of proportion. You may feel some pulling from the stitches, but nothing that will require a strong pain killer. The doctor or nurse will advise you on all of this and if he gives you a pain killer it will only be 3 or 4 of them.
Your doctor knows better. Actually, the pain doesn't last long.

Within in a week, you will surely feel better. There's no more

reversal, once you were circumcised, so dwell on the advantages of being circumcised. Actually there are also a lot of benefits, though there may be some drawbacks, as some claims. Get yourself braced to how you are now. Forget the past and faced the future with strong determination. Enjoy yourself like what you are, not what you wish you were!
    Honestly? Probably some vicodin.
Nothing cause it doesn't hurt that bad.
Nothing. They don't give you anything. lol

    Advil will work just fine.

It's nothing strong, circumcision doesn't hurt that much. People over react about the pain.

I have been through a hernia surgery where intestines fell into mu scrotum and it had to be surgecly fixed. That will hurt, circumcision not so much.

How can I tell teenagers that they are going to ruin their lives?

My job is to work with teenagers and adults who are causing Nuisance Behaviour. However I dont have kids and going on personal experience I know that I never listened to anyone when I was a teenager but I had Respect. Now there is no respect and they still arent listening! How can I tell kids between the ages of 10 - 17 that they are going to ruin their lives if they dont start behaving and showing more respect? HELP!How can I tell teenagers that they are going to ruin their lives?
My son is 10 - We had a talk about making bad choices or following the example of peers. Here is what I told him, in a nutshell:

First, I asked if he were going somewhere, like a vacation - far away, that he had only heard of, but never been to - who would he ask for information on how to get there safely?

Would he ask a classmate who has also heard of it, but never been there?

Or would he ask an adult who had been there before and knew the route well. Someone who might even be able to offer a few ideas of places to see, places to avoid, etc.

He was all onboard with talking to a grown up becasue he said that grownups know that kind of thing. (At least we are good for something!)

Then I compared his life-journey to a trip somewhere far, far away - adulthood. We talked about the fun, and the dangers.

Put into this perspective, he really seemed to ';get'; it.

Start off by asking your teens to do something unexpected - pick a place they have never heard of, they might like to visit. It will throw them off and get them interested. You can talk about how to plan for the trip - maybe invite along someone who has lived there, who would be willing to show them all the cool places to go? You could talk about the dangers of the place - like getting tossed in jail for [some weird, made-up crime, like wearing red] and how, if they had only talked to the person who had lived there, they would have known and will now be doomed to eat bread and water for the rest of their lives. Really get into it - them do the switch. They will be actively participating in the other (seemingly harmless and silly discussion) so this will sort of sneak up on them, in a sense. (as a teen, I would have happily joined any discussion that looked like it would avoid any topic I didn't feel like participating in)

Now that you have their attention, tell them that *you* are their tour guide.

Good luck to you. I'm sure even if it doesn't feel like it, you are helping a lot of kids become better adults.

Edit: I'd like to add that the kids you are working with probably hear all about their bad choices, that they are never going to be good for anything, that they are stupid, etc. from their parents. I think if you approach them in a genuinely caring way that doesn't put them on the defensive you will get further. Point out their good qualities and good choices so they can grow on them. If they know that you have a good opinion of them, they will strive to keep that good opinion. I'm not saying to be a push-over. But, just like Mary Poppins said: ';A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down';. A little kindness can go a long way.How can I tell teenagers that they are going to ruin their lives?
I think it depends upon the individual teenager. In a lot of ways some teenagers are like time bombs, they cannot control their own behaviour and you have to try and catch them at a receptive time when they will listen to you.

I think a lot of the trouble is their hormones and I know my own teenage son is more like an alien now than my son. We did nothing different with him than the other two kids but he is just like a time bomb ticking away and waiting to go off. Afterwards he is usually sorry but you know it will happen again.

I think you just have to keep talking to them and hope to catch them at a time when they are prepared to listen. They have tunnel vision and it is usually anyones fault than their own.

Trying to get through is all you can do and I know at times we have considered selling our son with his behaviour.
    I don't think you can...

It seems to me that respect is something you really have to be taught by your family as you're growing up. Or, after a certain point, by a mentor who is a HUGE part of their life and who demands respect.

I have that problem with my little brother...He's almost 16 and just has no respect for anybody, including his family. But it wasn't enforced when he was young, and now there's kind of no turning back. He's going to have to learn it the hard way. I just hope that someday when he's being disrespectful to some girl or adult or something that he gets knocked on his *** and maybe it'll sink in.
To start off with, you could try pointing out to them that if they don't respect others, not only will others will not respect them, but they will not deserve to be respected.

Or something like, ';sort yourself out, before someone else tries to sort you out';, or ';how will you feel if everybody else sees you as being nothing but a troublemaker? Is that really how you want to end up being labelled?';.

    Good luck.
Find a way to relate to them. Teenagers DO respect people that treat them with respect. Dont talk down to them. I always hated that. If they think you are cool (for lack of a better word), they will listen. Let them know that you arent judging them, you are there to help... not criticize.
You can't. The best thing you can do is lead by example. Show them some respect and hope and pray they'll pick up on how good it feels and return the favor to those they are annoying. That's a tough age and even though it's been 40 years, I remember it well.......
I think it's one of those things where they have to experience it themselves before they're going to listen.

How would I go about becoming a psychologist that treats teenagers?

What classes would I need to think about taking, starting in high school?

  • How many years do teenagers spend saving up for a car?

I just want a rough estimate. Assume that the teen has only a bit of parent help. Assume he/she has one of those low paying jobs as a clerk or something. Just a rough estimate. How many years do teenagers spend saving up for a car?
lol my first car was a 1987 ford tempo, stick shift. (which I bought in 2001) I paid $300 for my car! I saved up for about two months working part time at a video store. My parents didn't pay for any of it, but they DID pay my insurance premium (which was very nice of them) The car lasted me until the end of my Senior year before it totally died lol. I didn't need a car at college, so it was no problem. Later I saved up from my college summer job and bought a '97 Hyundai accent for $3500. It was a very dependable car which I continued to drive until I started having children and wanted a four door! :)How many years do teenagers spend saving up for a car?
None. lol. They really can't work a substantial amount of time. So it comes down to mechanics. If you have mechanics in the family and can afford a wonder car---under $500---thats great. If not, it usually means a loan and payments. For us, we agreed to a set monthly fee---$50 per month insurance and they didnt get cars until their senior yr in hs when they could afford $100 or so for a car payment. We also agreed that we would pay for 1/2 price of the car. My best suggestion is to keep the car in your own name----its no toy and I only had to pull it off the road once, but I was glad I had the ability to do so without the hassles of ';but its my car';.
1 year to 5 years ... actually it depends of the price of the car
    never thought about saving

    just ask mom and dad
i have been saving up for 10 years now....and i still dont have enough money for a new mugen honda civic....

    http://automobiles.honda.com/future-cars鈥?/a>
it depends on the car he wants he could save in two months for a $300 car but if he wants another car then maybe up to a year maybe 2 depending and as a mom i would make sure he has responsibility before letting them have a car even drive.
Will my first car was $1500.And I did a paper rout till I got all the money it tooked me about a 2 years. Cuz I was 14 when I started and i only put a lil bit away at a time. My husband mom co-sign for his car but he paid off the loan. And it tooked him 2 years to pay off the loan. But you can get a loan if you have a co-signer. and You can get as long as 4 years loan.Good luck.

    Low-carb Diets and Teens

    Nonsense or Common Sense?

    By Kelly Burgess

I was floored when my 16-year-old daughter told me that her best friend’s soccer coach had put the entire girls' soccer team on a low-carbohydrate diet. After all, in the reams of writing I’ve done on the subject of childhood nutrition, there are a few general “rules” about kids and food that seem to come up over and over. They are:

    1. Teenagers should never diet.

    2. Girls should never be told they need to diet.

    3. Girls who diet risk loss of bone mass.

    4. Female athletes who diet risk loss of bone mass, cessation of menses and eating disorders.

    5. Low-carbohydrate diets are bad for everyone.

So my question became this: How do these “rules” apply to low-carb diets and teens? What I discovered is that while numbers 1 through 4 are absolutely true, 5 is definitely open to a healthy interpretation.

    Teens and Dieting

Katie Bark, nutritionist and special project coordinator for the Team Nutrition Program at the Montana State University Department of Health and Human Development, says that rule No. 1 is unequivocally true.

“Teens should not be on a diet, because we don’t want to teach young people to diet, and we don’t want them to develop that diet mentality,” says Bark.

She's right to be concerned. According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), eating disorders are on the increase among teenage girls and young women. AACAP estimates that as many as 10 in 100 young women suffer from the two most serious eating disorders, anorexia nervosa and bulimia. This disordered eating comes from a variety of societal factors, and encouraging teens to “diet” is no solution. Rather, says Bark, the family should focus on good eating and exercise habits all the time.

And there’s the rub. Because the fact is, teens don’t generally have good exercise habits, nor do they have a well-rounded diet. Unfortunately, teens, even relatively amenable, well-informed teens like Bark’s two teenage daughters and my teenagers, like to eat junk. Soda pop, burgers, French fries and potato chips are much more attractive to teens than grilled fish and steamed veggies – no matter how lovingly the healthy dish is prepared.

    Low Carb = Low Sugar

When I told nutritionist Carol Simontacchi the soccer team story, her answer was, “Good. At least they’re cutting back on their sugar!”

She went on to qualify her initial reaction with an assurance that she does not like fad diets, does not like the idea of teens being on diets and thinks that Atkins is not a healthful low-carb approach. However, she also said the fact is that kids eat too much processed foods, eat and drink too much sugar and too many chemicals, and, in general, a low-carb diet can’t be much worse than what they’re already putting into their bodies.

Simontacchi should know. She’s the author of The Crazy Makers: How the Food Industry Is Destroying Our Brains and Harming Our Children (J. P. Tarcher, 2001) and the mother of four children who don’t always appreciate her nutritional expertise.

“The reality is that kids' eating habits are so bad at this point that if a low-carb diet can get them off junk food and soft drinks, it will be doing some good,” says Simontacchi. “Yes, some of the diets encourage a lot of red meat, but which is more harmful, red meat or 46 ounces of soft drinks?”

What low-carb diets do encourage that Simontacchi thinks is a good trend is vegetables. “Maybe low-carb is not good, but they’re now eating three servings of vegetables a day, up from zero servings before,” says Simontacchi. “Maybe it will balance their blood sugar, and that’s simply not a bad thing.”

    Bad Carbs, Good Carbs

Nori Hudson is another fan of low-carb diets – within reason. Hudson, a nutritionist and educator, says the problem with almost everyone’s diet is that we eat like marathon runners and then sit on the couch.

“Carbs are the body’s preferred source of energy, but when we don’t use those carbs, the body turns it to fat,” says Hudson. “The foods that tend to be quick foods are usually over-processed carbohydrates, such as potato chips and crackers. These are not foods anyone should be eating.”

Like Bark and Simontacchi, Hudson notes that no young person should diet. However, she deplores the eating habits of today’s teens and, like Simontacchi, thinks a low-carb diet can lead to some improvement in eating habits – if it’s done in a healthful manner.

In other words, low-carb isn’t necessarily unhealthy, just the recent fad diets that promote it, such as Atkins. “The Atkins diet is simply too restrictive to be healthful for a teen who is growing and putting down 50 percent of their calcium in the bone bank for future bone health,” says Bark.

A recent study published in the National Library of Medicine justifies Bark’s concerns. It showed strong anecdotal evidence that a low-carb diet followed for as little as six weeks can increase the risk for bone loss. While this is not desirable at any age group, it can be particularly devastating to the long-term bone health of teenage girls who are following Atkins-type diets, which severely limit healthy calcium sources.

However, a diet that restricts processed carbohydrates, such as white breads, potato chips and sugary snacks, in favor of high-quality carbohydrates such as fruit, vegetables and whole grains, is an excellent choice for anyone. Pair that with protein sources that are lower in saturated fats, such as poultry and fish, and low-fat dairy products, such as skim milk and fat-free yogurts, and you have a healthy diet.

Is it low-carb? It is if you compare it to what teens normally eat. Is it healthy? Absolutely, as long as the idea is to make healthful food choices and not to restrict calories.

    Those Wild Teen Eaters

And now back to my daughter’s best friend’s diet. She wasn’t on it for three minutes before she was eating pizza in my kitchen. Why? Because she’s a teenager, that’s why.

There’s so much research showing that teens are hardwired to do the opposite of whatever it is their parents want them to do that quoting it here would make this article a book. So I’ll just quote my experts, Bark and Simontacchi, two nutritionists with six teenagers between them.

';My kids have been brought up on a healthy diet and been taught extensively about good nutrition, but they’re teens and they’re eating stuff they know I don’t like, and I hate it,'; says Simontacchi. ';One day, I said to my daughter, 'I’m a nutritionist and this is what my kids are bringing into my house?' Her answer was that if I saw what the other kids are eating, I would see that I had really made progress with them.”

    ';I have two daughters, 17 and 16, and it’s so normal for them to exert their independence by going out to eat,'; says Bark. ';It can make you crazy, but you really have to be careful not to push, or they go even further in the other direction.';

Both professional and personal experiences have taught Bark and Simontacchi that keeping the lines of communication open is important. If your child tells you she is on or wants to be on a low-carb diet, make sure she understands what healthy choices she can make within those parameters. Explain the pros and cons of low-carb – particularly the concerns about loss of bone mass – and make sure he or she has healthy, low-carb choices at home, since those that are offered in restaurants and fast-food places often rely heavily on unhealthy, saturated fats.

Simontacchi says that making deals works also. For example, tell him that you’ll support his low-carb diet approach if he promises to eat at least two vegetables per day.

And don’t give up. Like many other things that they do from the time they’re toddlers until they hit about 30, this, too, shall pass. Eventually, they will grow out of the teen junk food phase and remember the good food habits you’ve always tried to instill.
