If study shows teenagers are supposed to get 8-10 hours of sleep why does school start so early?

Most schools start from 7-9 AM, and teenagers go to sleep from 10pm-2am everynight. So that means they wake up around 6am. This means most teenagers when school is in session get 4-7hours of sleep each night. If study shows teenagers are supposed to get 8-10 hours of sleep why does school start so early?
Good point. I wish we would start later. If study shows teenagers are supposed to get 8-10 hours of sleep why does school start so early?
Some school district are starting HS later than ES, as long as the elementary kids don't have to be at the bus stop before the sun raises.

teenagers need to go to sleep earlier. the system will not change for you. you need to adapt to they system.

actually i am a student attending a high school. school for us starts at 7:40 in the morning when middle and elementry school starts between 8:10 and 8:40. the reason teenagers start early is so we get out of school earlier. most teenagers have jobs so with school getting out early we can go to work

I agree with u but the sooner we get to school, the earlier we get out. But one thing that really annoys me is how teachers pile alot of homework when for example we have to use most of our sleeping time since we need more sleep than anyone else.

Because the high schools and middle schools usually share a transportation system with elementary schoolers.

They can't have have high school/middle school start later because that would mean the elementary school has to start earlier. School systems don't want there to be elementary schoolers waiting for the bus in the wee hours of the morning.

And also becuase If the highschool/middle school starts later, that means extra ciriculars will end even later then they usually do. So instead of ending a basket ball game at around 9pm, all of a sudden your ending around 11. maybe even midnight.

So having highschools and middle schools start later kinda kills two birds with one stone: keeps teens off school grounds at late hours, and keep little kids off the streets during the morning when its dark.
Actually, you bring up a good point. A lot of parents are advocating for school to start later. But if you think about it, adults get off work at 5 and they still have to make dinner, finish presentations, and stuff just like teenagers.

If you get off school at 3, and go to bed at 10, you can get 8 hours of sleep while having 7 hours of time after school. If it takes you 1 hour for band practice, 4 hours for homework, 1 hour for dinner, and then 1 hour for TV andchores and having fun, then I think that it's enough time to do everything that u need to do. It's just about managing your time correctly and making the most out of every minute. In other words, stop staring at your computer screen doing nothing!
I just wanted to point out that the hormones running rampant in teens screws up their internal clocks, and if left to their own devices will sleep mostly during the late morning and early afternoon.

Schools run on adults schedules, not the kids or teens.
School starts early in order to end early; no sane teacher/student wants to be at school from 10-6.

Although, you do raise a legitimate point. The argument to be made here is that teens need to go to bed earlier.
Do you think--maybe--that teenagers could have the judgement and maturity to go to bed earlier? Just a thought.

Being a mat rempit with the full intent to disturb the peace, rob, sometimes rape and infuriate people is quite far-fetched. But why are our youths so messed-up and become one??What drive malaysian teenagers to be detestable mat rempits?
Nowadays, the so called Mat Rem pits are tainted by a few black sheep's because they are desperado's out to create chaos and did despicable things like rape, rob and bully the peace loving people.

How much do teenagers get paid for babysitting on average these days?

When I was a teen, I think I got paid $2 and hour or something, but that's been awhile ago. Does it make a difference how many kids there are? (I have two) or their ages? (3, and not quite two) I've always had family members or close friends who didn't charge anything watch them before, and I don't want to pay this teen who's going to watch them unfairly. How much do teenagers get paid for babysitting on average these days?
It depends on the ares. My first babysitting job was in a very rich area and I got $10 an hour. Other parts usually pay around 4 or 5.How much do teenagers get paid for babysitting on average these days?
Well first you have to think how many hours. I babysit one day a week for 8 hours and I get payed $30.00 for just one day. Most people pay between $3.00-$4.50 a hour. I hope this info. will help you out. Good Luck
First of all find out experience of babysitter and call other people thet have babysat for. Ask the sitter how much they think they ought to get paid and negotiate from there. Having more than one child to care for should pay a little more than one child and it also depends on how many hours they sit for.
I have two babysitters and I pay them differently. When my first babysitter was still in 8th grade, I paid her $4/hour. However, my other babysitter charges $5/hour, so when they were both in high school that's what we paid. I live in Alaska, where the cost of living is very high, and about $5/hour is the going rate. Someone here listed very high charges and I think you may need to consider whether you want parents to use your services. Just like in any other economic situation, if you charge too much, the customers will go to someone else who charges less. My adult day care provider, a very competent and trustworthy woman, received $35/day for taking care of my two children. Some other professional child care providers charge $25 - $35 per day for caring for a child. As a babysitter, you can charge $5 or $6 or maybe up to $7/$8 per hour, but you need to stop and think about whether the customer can afford it at that point.
i usually get $5 an hour for one kid, but if there are two, pay more!!! Its harder to babysit younger children as well, especially if you have a 2 year old and a 3 year old! It takes a lot of work just to keep one small child entertained, I'm not ashamed to say that I probably wouldn't even try to babysit two young children... because I personally don't have the patience. I would say $10 an hour.
To me I think that teenagers should get paid base on how well exp they are. like me I work with kids all day so thats means I WHOULD CHARGE YOU ALL DAY FROM 9-5 50DOLLARS, OVER NIGHT 85DOLLARE, 2-3 HOURS ABOUT 25DOLLARS BUT AT THE SAME TIME YOU HAVE TO NOT FORGET ABOUT THE AGE.

What can ';underage'; teenagers do to help/work with animals?

I'm 14 and love animals and worked at an animal shelter but they only allow underage kids if they need their school hours and they have a huge waiting list.

What other things can I do?What can ';underage'; teenagers do to help/work with animals?
Like the first poster said, try fostering. Most foster dogs get adopted within a few months, so if it's too much for your family to have a dog, it's not a 15 year commitment. What can ';underage'; teenagers do to help/work with animals?
Hmm... you could try walking neighbors dogs or dog sitting. I don't know how many people would want a 14 year old doing this but it's worth a shot!

It's hard being 14 but in a few years you're chances and opportunities will widen and you'll be able to work pretty much anywhere.

If your family is up to it you could foster dogs for shelters. Nurse them to health and help them find loving homes. I would try for it - you can take care of most of the daily work like walking and brushing as long as mom or dad don't mind driving the dog around for vet checks and such. Wouldn't hurt to ask!
dog walker is a great option:

print up some 'business cards' and distribute them around your area, and hang posters and give out your card near dog runs. introduce yourself to people in your area walking dogs and be honest, say ';i love animals, i would love to get to know your dog and help you out by walking him when you are busy or away';. you'll get a few people (maybe neighbors and friends) and if you're good word will spread quickly (since you're young, don't charge a lot, you can raise your fees as your name gets out. maybe 5$ for a 20 minute walk?)

another thing you could do is contact a vet in your area - when i was 15 i went on weekends and mostly just watched what the vets and technicians did, and then they started letting me do small things like hold the animals when they give it a shot, or clean out their kennels and give them food (yea it's dirty sometimes, but great experience - not i'm a veterinary student, so gotta start somewhere!)
I'm sure you can volenteer at the humane society.

Also, you can sponser a dog, and help other abused and rescued dogs on this site:

    http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com

It's great, and of course, clicking on the purple button will give free food to all sorts of animals!

You can also ask if you can help with taking care of the animals at a local pet shop.

Just some ideas, hope i helped!
You didn't mention if you were interested in a specific type of animal or all in general.

I went to a local farm and was able to spend a lot of time with the horses. I cleaned stalls which really isn't that bad. but I walked the horses in and out and brushed them

    and chatted :-) etc...

I loved and they give you a couple bucks per stall which doesn't take long to clean

I just did it to be around the horses not the money !!!

    Good luck

How to stop teenagers from plagiarizing and interest them to start reading?

I am a high school teacher that has caught so many of my students plagiarizing. Also I have given them a book report however know that most of them will not read their books. How can I encourage them to read? How to stop teenagers from plagiarizing and interest them to start reading?
If they are plagiarizing, they must care a little bit about getting a decent grade, because if they didn't care, they'd just do a crappy job on it themselves or not do it at all. Tell them this, and that they can be expelled from college the FIRST time they are caught plagiarizing. And they don't get their money back. And yes, give pop quizzes covering the chapters and make them worth a lot of points - or even count towards their essay grade. Have them turn in a rough draft of the essay so you can check it early for plagiarism. Or even this - after they turn in their essays, have a pop quiz on the topic of your essay and how you defended it, and what you sources were. That should be an easy start to checking who cheated. How to stop teenagers from plagiarizing and interest them to start reading?
I find making assignments really hard to plagiarize is a great way to go about it and it can help focus their writing and speed up your grading. Putting in very specific requirements and structure, especially in 9,10 grades is helpful because they often feel overwhelmed.

There is a time and place for creativity, etc.,

And yes, fail them, notify admin and their parents, and keep of file of copyiers. I also encourage a certain level of ';cheating'; because it makes sense. I bring in Sparks of Cliff's notes because it is good critical theory. I make them brainstorm with their classmates because it encourages them to think.

To encourage them to read, you need to give them things they want to read. Are you talking about in-class or independent reading? In class can be tricky. I found, when I got an English11(American) curriculum dumped in my lap last year, I found the text books older than me and largely beyond the ability and interest of my students. I picked out a handful of things that worked then violated copywrite to creat a multicultural lit section composed of things written after 1900 (most after 1950) and tons of YA

YA is also the key to independent reading. The LOVE it. And, really, Speak, Twilight, Harry, and the million other wonderful stories out there, are really good stories. Some of them are worthy of classroom study. I got my freshmen to read by ';lowering'; myself to their level. I was hooked. I'm now a YA junkie and miss book talk days I used to have now that I teach almost exclusively AP classes.

Oh, and book reports are not a good idea for students who copy. Book reviews, book talks, I-think papers, character analysis...these are better alternative.

And have in-class required reading time. It validates the assignment and gives them time to get it done.
Show them some examples of poor writing. Your second to last sentence would be a good example. Explain that reading will improve their spelling, vocabulary, sentence structure, and knowledge. Show them that writing can be simple and beautiful. A good example could come from Hemingway. Many great authors have been banned from our education system due to political correctness run amok. An example would be Mark Twain. Would we have Huck Finn calling his runaway slave friend African American Jim. Of course not. What else would an uneducated poor boy from that time period call Jim if not N..... Jim. What was missed by the hysterical censors is that Huck looked up to Jim as a good and honorable man. That was a radical view over a hundred years ago when this was written. My favorite short story writer is Sidney Porter who slammed my Italian nationality in one of his stories. In his stories most latin women are beautiful and latin men are short and fat comical characters prone to starting revolutions. Blacks do not fare well either, see ';Whistling Dick's Christmas Stocking.'; You could read a nonoffending paragraph of OHenry as a contrast to Hemingway. O'Henry will be difficult to understand for the average high school or college student. They will not get the historical and literal references which are usually delivered in a made up western lingo. One of his easier stories, ';The Gift of the Magi'; was required reading befor I dropped out of high school. Start reading and lead by example. If you speak well you may find some students will wish to emulate you. However if you give them too much to read they may wish to immolate you instead. Good luck
give them pop quizzes and also tell them if they plagrize they'll get a zero for it and cant make it up...also tell dem u'll call their parents and let them no wats going on.. you should make the essay worth a lot of points because wen report cards come out they can see they r doing poorly
Make sure they understand how severely it's looked upon in colleges (for any students planning to attend) and that most colleges will expel a student for plagiarism.

Be sure to cover the importance of recognizing the efforts of others through proper citation. Encourage the use of citation, it's much easier to tell someone has read properly if they cite the work, and properly use quotations.

Don't be afraid to maintain strict standards or zero tolerance for cheating and plagiarizing. If they go on to college doing this they stand a good chance of getting expelled, it's in their interest to learn this now. DO explain the importance along with your grading policy. Just telling them they'll fail if they do it will motivate them only enough not to fail.

Know the sources they may use to cheat, review the cliff's notes versions and check google to look for what's available online so you can spot it easier, and let your students know you are on top of all this.

As far as interesting them in reading, this is among the greatest difficulties in education. Try to find a story they'll like, that also meets your class requirements. Target your classroom approach to their ability level. Do less in class reading in a more advanced class, it will slow down faster students and they'll just resent it.

Do regular reviews of chapters and class discussions to help them understand what they're reading and to demonstrate that they will have to regularly answer questions about the book, which they will only get right if they've read it.

Think back to reading assignments you had as a student and what worked to motivate you and your classmates. This will give you better insight than anything else.

I didn't have a job for the entire 2007 year.

So anyway, will i be receiving anything from this package, like a check?

I get such mixed answers. So if you say yes or no, i'd like you to support your answer some how.

Thank You!What Will Teenagers Recieve From The Economic Stimulus Package?
If you didn't work or pay taxes in 2007, then you will not receive anything at all.

But the bill hasn't been passed, the details aren't finalized yet, so nobody knows exactly how it will work right now. That's why you keep getting different answers. Anyone who says they know for sure what will happen is wrong - nobody knows yet. What Will Teenagers Recieve From The Economic Stimulus Package?
NO ONE KNOWS THE DETAILS YET - Congress is still discussing this!

It's pretty safe to say though that if you're being claimed as a dependent on your parents return, you won't be getting a rebate check.
If you are under 18 years old then no you will not get one, your parents will get some on you.

You can't. All of those things are available through public schools. Since your parents have chosen to bypass public schooling, you are not entitled to such grants. How can teenagers apply for educational grants for things such as laptops or books?
I'm not aware that these grants are available for home-schoolers, but I would definitely do some more research. First off, start with the home schooling board and find out what's available. Also check this website for more information on grants:

*No homo ideas please. My friend is a devoted Christian. What can teenagers do during the summer?
Im 15, and its summer. We usually go walk around town, its pretty fun. Walk around the mall. Go play mini golf. Go bowl. Go to a recreation center and play like basketball or raquetball. Just chill at home, watch movies and talk. Invite people over. Go to walmart or something with some friends and play hide and go seek. Do some prank calls. Get an older friend who can drive you around, makes things much easier. What can teenagers do during the summer?
Well I always think going back to when you were a kid can be fun. Have a tea party, with pretty dresses and actual tea. Or go to the zoo or a public park and fly kites or ride bikes. Ask an older sibling or parent to drive you to the city for a night out on the town. Maybe see a concert or go to a fancy dinner. Try finding a museum to go to in the city. Bake goodies. Go on a hike or walk. See a movie. Go to the mall. Go bowling. Have fun, soon you'll have to get a job and having fun becomes harder.
Volunteer at a soup kitchen, sister :)

What can teenagers do for the environment?

What are some programs that my friends and I could get involved in, or some things that we could do for the environment? Is there a Yahoo group for this? What can teenagers do for the environment?
Most areas have land steward programs where teens can get out and help maintain local wilderness areas by removing exotic plants and maintaining trails. Join an annual cleanup program, or go out on your own with a group and pick up a trashy site every month.

There are community gardens, where the young can rub shoulders with the elderly and get a little life experience while learning about the basics of growing food.

Educate yourselves. Get a degree in a field where you can make a difference, such as ecology. Join a group. Start a group. Write letters, sign initiatives. Don't stand silent when you strongly believe something wrong is going on.

Vote. And have good responses for friends who tell you they don't.

Don't smoke, drive cars that get good milage, or ride a bike and use mass transit.

    Buy recycled products.

So many, many things you can do. I'm sure there are local programs in your area. Check with one of your teachers at school or a local church, they can probably give you some great ideas.

Good luck. What can teenagers do for the environment?
    don't drive
Local action is the best!! Look for a project/problem in your locality and get helping!
personally, i find that going to volunteermatch.com is a great way to find events help in your area to benefit the environment. Also, you can help by reading and watching 'An Inconvenient Truth'...such a good book. Also, Arbor Day is coming up on the 27th so get a bunch of your friends to go out and plant a couple trees. If you really wanted to get a little messy, usually neighborhoods have like a street cleanup event. Recycling is also a great way to kickstart in to environmental mode!!!

How many teenagers fell pregnant while you were at school?

Do you think the numbers are different from today?

Need facts from people to put in my speech.

    Hope you can help.

Thanks Brit. How many teenagers fell pregnant while you were at school?
The numbers are insanely high today. I'm 29, and when i graduated in '99, there was 1 girl who was pregnant! I knew another who was a grade ahead of me, but she had her baby junior year. They were also accidents.

It is a trend to have babies in high school now. Girls think it's ';cool'; and think it makes them appear more mature. They also use it as a way to ';trap'; their boyfriends. It's crazy, and immature..and there is no reason why anyone in high school should be planning on getting themselves pregnant! In fact, girls today have WAY more information that we did...so there is no excuse for all of these teen pregnancies. How many teenagers fell pregnant while you were at school?
I don't know about the entire school, but of the girls in my grade there were at least four or five each year (different girls each year). So between 16 and 20 of just my grade level during my four years of high school.

I know there were girls that were both older and younger than me who got pregnant. But I don't know the particulars of their numbers.

Also, just so you know, I graduated 10 years ago.

EDIT: I also knew a couple of girls in my middle school who got pregnant while in middle school. But that number was much lower. There were only 1 or 2 girls that had children that young.
I was 17 and in Year 11 when I fell pregnant. I was 1 of 3 girls who were pregnant. The other 2 were in Year 12. I went to a school where there were 2000 people, so I think 3 out of 2000 was very good (this was 3 years ago). but even since then I think the numbers have risen. I know a lot of girls fell pregnant before I started going to the school I was at because they have a separate part to the school called NETschool where if you fell pregnant and you couldn't keep going to school, you could either go into NETschool and do your work with others who were pregnant or had babies or do it from home over the internet. You would do the same work as if you were going to normal school, you would be doing your VCE.

I kept going to school for 5 months after I found out and then I went to NETschool. There were about 20 girls who went there and I was only one pregnant at the time, they all had had their babies. You could take your babies into NETschool with you while you did schoolwork and they had a lot of baby facilities and some of the teachers would look after your baby while you finished off some schoolwork.

It was like a social networking thing too where you met other young mums. It is fantastic thing to have.

Sorry, I rambled on a bit there.
i went to a school where they had a daycare built in, because almost every girl i went to middle school with was pregnant by high school. it was bad, there were like 70-90 pregnant girls ranging from freshman to senior, although most were freshman and sophomores. and yeah i think it's way different. because its so common, it's becoming more ';socially acceptable';, so when they do become pregnant, it's not that big of a deal, which makes it a problem.
I graduated from high school 20 years ago and there was only one girl out of a class of 1000 who got pregnant during high school and had her baby before the year was over. Another girl got pregnant near the end of the school year and delivered after graduation. It was very taboo back then to even think about teen pregnancy. People talked if they knew you even had sex.
You can't use peoples experiences they tell you about on here as sources of facts because you can't actually confirm that their story is indeed true nor do peoples opinions necessarily affect the actual statistics. For instance, in Canada the rate is actually decreasing though people would be inclined to say its increasing. See below links:

wow some the answers on here make me sick! there is absolutly NO reason why girls in high school should be getting pregnant! i agree with Ashley, there are too many resources available for these teens to be so stupid. Go on birth control or close your f**king legs!
I believe the numbers have risen, and it's only been six years since I had my daughter. Yes,I was in 10th grade when I got pregnant. There were a couple girls as well as myself that were pregnant.
There are currently 13 people at my school who are pregnant.

And that's not counting the ones who have already had their kids.
ALOT LOL I WOULD SAY ABOUT 10 EACH SCHOOL YEAR

Do teenagers that work have to file a tax report ?

A girl at school told me that once you start working you are going to have to file a tax report. I don't really think it's true but just to be sure.Do teenagers that work have to file a tax report ?
Yes, you do. At the end of the year, your employer will give you a W-2 form showing how much money you earned during the year and how much was withheld from your pay in taxes. You file a tax return (usually a form called a 1040EZ or 1040A) and send it to the IRS (or do it on line) and in most cases, if you're only working part time, you'll get back all the money you paid in as a refund.Do teenagers that work have to file a tax report ?
Sometimes. It depends on how much you make. If you have ONLY earned income (no bank interest, stock investments, etc.), then you can make a few thousand without having to file an income tax form. Generally, unless you have either at least $1500 in interest, at least $1500 in dividends, or any capital gains, you can file Form 1040EZ which is very simple.
It depends on how much you make. If they take out social security and medicare, then you don't have to file unless you make at least $5450 for the year. If they don't take out ss and medicare then you have to file if you make over $400.
    yes.

    it's called a W-2

if you're still living with them, just get your parents to fill it out.

also, it may or may not be necessary based on your yearly income
It depends on your income. If your income is more than your standard deduction then yes you do.
    Yes you will.

Teenagers: What type of party theme would you like and why?

I am planning a b-day party for my niece's 13th bday. I'm 21 so I'm not that out of touch with what you guys like, but I would love suggestions.Teenagers: What type of party theme would you like and why?
Retro stuff. like all the cool bright colors and like strobe lights, and blak lights, because i think it would be cool.Teenagers: What type of party theme would you like and why?
When I was thirteen, we went to Papa John's and each got to make our own pizza. It was awesome, and everyone had a lot of fun. It's not something they advertise, but you can talk to your local store and see if they'd be ok with it.

If not, then making your own pizza at home is pretty fun too. Publix sells the raw dough in its bakery section, and you can stock up on usual and unusual toppings, depending on the discerning taste of your 13-year old.
    rave party :D im 13

they wear bright neon stuff and have a dj and lights and a disco and glow sticks

or fancy dress like bee costumes and stuff

thats what im having for my 14th
Black and white, rock star, block party, glamour life party.

Teenagers: How often do you see your boyfriend during the school term?

I go to an all girls school and he goes to an all boys school

We usually see each other once a week. But lately he's been getting busier and we're going 2/3 weeks without seeing each other.

I'm not really bothered I realize he needs that time to work. But i sometimes wonder if maybe compared to most people we don't see each other enough.Teenagers: How often do you see your boyfriend during the school term?
he goes to a school that's an hour away, so we see each other on weekends. sometimes we have to go a few weeks without, though

    i'd say you're pretty normal.

to make up for it, we talk online a lot and call each other after it's free on our cell phones.Teenagers: How often do you see your boyfriend during the school term?
You are lucky you get to see him. I am a teen and my boyfriend has a full time job and i don't get to see him. We talk on the phone all the time and we are planing to meet up this weekend. He proposed to me over the weekend so as soon as i graduate we are out of here. So i am not sure what an average amount of time to see your boyfriend would be,

Do you have to do chores at home?

Do you get an allowance for doing ur chores?Teenagers
i have a butt load of chores.

it varies from doing the dishes. to cleaning my room. to sweeping all of the hardwood/tile floors in our house. to everyones laundry.

    and i never get paid.

my parents point is that they work hard to give us a home and food and a life and they shouldnt' have to pay me to clean up just a little.

    Teenagers
Do you really think you have to be paid just for helping your parents keeping the house clean, putting the dishes on the table, cleaning your room, etc..?

    Isn't it a bit weird?

Ok, does your mum have less 'social rank' than you that she has to wash the dishes (or another chore)?

If you help your parents it's because you think you have to do it, no for the money they can give you..
    yes

yes.. a pitiful one. and i have to pay for most of my things.

BTW, cleaning one's room should NOT be a paid chore, it's your stuff
I don't do chores, I just do favours when asked - I don't expect to get paid.
